Key Features of GIF Cropper

Visual crop box — drag to select

Drag the selection box over any area of your GIF. Resize from corners or edges, and the crop region updates in real time on the live animation preview.

All frames preserved

Every frame is cropped to the same region. Frame timing and loop count stay exactly as in the original, so the animation plays back the same way.

Aspect ratio presets

Use one-click presets for common ratios like 1:1 square, 16:9 widescreen, 4:3 standard, and 9:16 story. Lock the ratio or crop freely.

Local processing, no upload

Your GIF never leaves your device. All cropping happens in your browser, with no server upload and no privacy concerns.

Guides & Tips

How to crop an animated GIF — keep the area you want

  • 1. Upload your GIF

Drag and drop your animated GIF. The file loads instantly in your browser — no upload, no wait, and your file never leaves your device.

  • 2. Choose a crop area

Drag the handles on the selection box to define the region you want to keep. Use a preset like 1:1 for Instagram squares, 16:9 for widescreen, or 9:16 for vertical stories — or set a custom free-form crop. The live preview shows exactly what the result will look like.

  • 3. Fine-tune with numeric inputs (optional)

Use the X, Y, Width, and Height inputs for pixel-precise control over the crop region. Lock the aspect ratio to constrain proportions as you resize.

  • 4. Download your cropped GIF

Click Crop GIF. Every frame is cropped to the exact same region and re-encoded while preserving the original timing and loop count. Download instantly — no watermark and no account needed.

Need a smaller file after cropping? Run the result through our GIF Compressor. Want to change the overall dimensions instead? Use the GIF Resizer to scale the file.

Crop a GIF for Instagram — square format and more

Instagram uses different aspect ratios depending on where the content appears. If you are preparing a GIF for social media, cropping to the right ratio keeps the subject framed correctly and avoids awkward cutoffs.

Instagram feed — square (1:1)

  • Aspect ratio: 1:1 (square)
  • Recommended resolution: 1080×1080 px
  • Use the 1:1 preset to crop your GIF to a clean square. The crop centers automatically, and you can drag it to reposition the subject.

Instagram Story — portrait (9:16)

  • Aspect ratio: 9:16 (full-screen portrait)
  • Recommended resolution: 1080×1920 px
  • Use the 9:16 preset for Stories or other vertical placements.

Instagram Reel — widescreen (16:9)

  • Aspect ratio: 16:9 (landscape)
  • Recommended resolution: 1920×1080 px
  • Use the 16:9 preset when you want a wide crop for previews or landscape placements.

After cropping, check the file size. If the GIF is still too large for your platform, use our GIF Compressor to reduce it further.

Crop GIF vs Resize GIF — what is the difference?

GIF CropperGIF Resizer
What changesThe visible area — removes pixels from the edges to show only part of the frameThe scale of the whole frame — makes everything larger or smaller
Main use caseRemoving unwanted borders, fitting a specific aspect ratio, or focusing on a subjectMeeting pixel size requirements like 128×128 for Discord emoji or 112×112 for Twitch emotes
Side effectContent outside the selection is removed and cannot be recovered from the cropped fileThe whole image stays visible, but its display size changes

These two tools work well together: crop first to get the right composition and aspect ratio, then resize to meet platform pixel requirements.
