When and why you should convert GIF to APNG
GIF and APNG are both animated image formats, but they work very differently under the hood. GIF, introduced in 1987, uses LZW compression and a 256-color palette with binary transparency — a pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque. APNG extends PNG with animation support and carries 24-bit color plus a full 8-bit alpha channel. That difference is the whole reason people look for gif apng conversion in the first place: APNG is the format capable of holding smooth transparency and full color.
One thing to be clear about before you start. A gif to apng converter cannot invent detail the GIF already lost. GIF frames were quantized down to 256 colors and their alpha was flattened to on or off, so what conversion from gif to apng gives you is the same pixels in a more capable container — no further palette loss, but no restoration either. To turn gif into apng and actually gain APNG's advantages, you have to rebuild the animation from the original images or video.
What actually changes when you convert
The frame sequence, per-frame delays and loop settings carry over untouched. Each frame is decoded, composited according to its disposal method so partial frames don't leave trails or holes, then re-encoded as a true-color RGBA PNG frame. That compositing step is what makes the output a real animated PNG rather than a stack of stills: to turn gif into animated png, every frame has to be put back together first. You can convert animated gif to animated png without dropping or duplicating a single frame.
Animated PNG, APNG and the name confusion
APNG, animated PNG and "moving PNG" all describe the same file, and search traffic for them overlaps heavily. Whether you want to convert gif to animated png or simply convert to apng from another animated source, the steps are identical. You can also convert to animated png and rename the file's extension to .png, since some applications only recognise .png.
File size: APNG is not always smaller
This is the most common surprise. PNG deflate compression usually beats GIF's LZW on flat-color artwork — UI animations, icons, logos and simple stickers often come out smaller. Photographic or noisy GIFs usually come out larger, because a lossless APNG stores true-color pixels where the GIF stored a 256-color index. A straight gif vs apng size comparison only makes sense file by file, which is why the converter shows before and after. If the result is too large for your use, try fewer colors or a smaller width, or start from a smaller GIF.
Discord, stickers and emoji
Custom emoji and stickers are one of the most common reasons to look for gif to apng discord conversion. Discord renders them as APNG, and a GIF's binary transparency leaves a jagged halo around the artwork. If you need gif to apng for discord, convert here and download the APNG, or convert gif to apng for discord in bulk by uploading several files at once and taking the ZIP. One caveat: some clients and older apps show only the first frame, so keep the GIF or export an MP4 where compatibility matters more.
Browser and app support
APNG plays in Chrome (59+), Firefox (3+), Safari (8+) and Edge (12+), plus most Chromium-based browsers. Internet Explorer does not support it. Some older desktop apps and certain messaging clients show only the first frame — renaming .apng to .png helps in a few of them. For platforms that require GIF, use the APNG to GIF converter to make a compatible version.
